It is almost impossible to have self-expression and self-confidence divided into two different types of human development. Self-expression and self-confidence do not stand alone - as self-expression develops first, self-confidence follows. And they are both crucial skills for a child to learn from a young age.
You can have a strong impact on your child’s development of positive self-expression and secure self-confidence. It is never too early to begin developing these qualities in your child.
What is self-expression and confidence?
Self-expression is the ability of a child to learn both the spoken and unspoken language. It is about learning to communicate honestly and without reserve, and let other people know how they feel.
Self-confidence is critical in life. It determines whether you will be in control of your life or let others control your life for you. Developing self-confidence as a child leads to success in relationships, education endeavors, establishing a strong career path, as well as mental health and happiness.
When does a child develop self-expression and confidence?
It is never too early to begin teaching your child about self-expression and self-confidence; however, it is easier between the ages of 2 and 9. As your child begins to speak and responds to someone’s tone of speech and facial expression, it becomes easier to establish positive self-expression with your child. This begins the learning steps of the use of the spoken language in an effective manner.
Through the learning of using words wisely, your child will develop skills in self-expression in the ability to speak up for him or herself, learning to not use negative words when complaining, but using different words to share ideas clearly and with respect, and learning how to treat others. Teach your child by initiating conversations with your child, asking your child to explain something he or she said, encouraging your child to ask questions, and keeping eye contact with your child during a conversation.
Self-confidence can be shared with your child from infancy by always letting your child know how much you love him or her. Don’t be afraid to be affectionate to your child, so he or she knows that your love is unconditional. This gives your child the base to establishing self-confidence and worth in his or her life.
Toys that can boost confidence and self-expression
Believe it or not, there are toys that can boost these two skills in your child. Letting them play with action figures, or role playing (for example in a toy kitchen with a friend or sibling), can help them vocalize certain problems and learn how to express themselves through the character.
You should also choose toys that challenge your child, but not to the point that they can never do what is required of them. And your own reactions count, too. If your child sees you struggling to put together a toy, for example, stay calm and you’re teaching them that there is a way through difficult situations!
